Can we at least agree that Mary was boring until she went blind?

They say money can't buy happiness. I say bullshit...when happiness takes the form of 12 books from the thrift store priced at 50 cents a paperback and $1 a hardcover, you bet your ass I just bought myself about a month's worth of literary joy. At one point during my book buying binge, a little voice inside me said "do you really need this many books? You still have  the Leaning Tower of Books teetering precariously next to the couch that you haven't even read yet, plus another elevently million books packed into bookshelves and taking up most available surfaces of your apartment. Maybe you should step away from the fiction."

This thought lasted approximately 3.8 seconds and ended as soon as I came to my senses and put that dissenting voice into a mental chokehold while the other voices monkey-stomped the shit out of it. Because if there is one thing I cannot abide, it's book-haters. Even imaginary ones.

One of the books in today's haul is Melissa Gilbert's memior, which I had to have because I'm a rabid Little House On The Prairie fan. As I kid I read those books until they were dog-eared and I still pull them out about once a year and revisit the Ingalls clan. I'm also sure I've seen every episode of the tv show at least 20 times, my favorite being any episode that Nellie Oleson featured heavily in. Because that girl was the best uber-bitch before there even was such a thing as an uber bitch. The snark, the snobbery, the pure evil underneath those boing-boing curls and giant floppy hair ribbons...so bitchtastic!

Look at that sneer...bow down to the Goddess of Mean and worship the boing-boing curls

Anyways, I'm hoping Melissa Gilbert's memoir devotes a LOT of space to LHOTP and has all kinds of juicy tidbits and behind the scenes stuff that will make the fangirl in me squeal with  pleasure. I'm also hoping she talks about when she was dating Rob Lowe in the 80's because I looooooove him (however I did not looooove his book because there should have been way more Brat Pack reminiscing and way less chatting about Rob getting ousted from the West Wing and why Aaron Sorkin is a dick.)

Were you a Little House fan? Team Laura or Team Nellie?

  1. OMG, LHOTP was my FAVORITE SHOW! We used to play it all the time, my brother, sister and cousins and I. I always got to be Laura. See, I was trying to be the good girl even then.

Heavy emphasis on "trying." Kinda like Laura was always trying. :)

    1. That was the thing with Laura, she tried so hard to be good, but she always seemed to end up in a bit of shit...which is totally relatable and what I thought made her so likable

  2. Aw giiiirrrrllll! If I could high five ya right now, I SO would be! I was a LIttle House junkie. Had all the books. Read them over and over and I too, have seen every one of those episodes repeatedly. I had long braids and people occasionally called me Half Pint. That makes me Team Laura. But yeah, nobody was as "bitchtastic" (love that) as Nellie. Except maybe huh Muthuh. I was thinking about reading the Melissa Gilbert book. Let me know how you like it. Did you know the actress who played Nellie has a book out too? I read the reviews and it's supposed to be even better than Gilbert's!

    1. While I loved Laura for all her spunk, Nellie was such an awesome villian...you truly loved to hate her. The best in the tv show was anytime Nellie and Laura got in a fight and Laura kicked her ass

Oh man, the tv Nellie's mom (Harriet, I think was her name), she was AWESOME!! Such a bitch but that woman would have walked over molten lava for Nellie...or probably would have made her husband do it lol

I had no idea Alison Angram wrote a book until I googled for the pic in this post...I HAVE to buy that!!

  3. I loved that book series, and though I was disappointed in some aspects of the television series as compared to the books, I still loved the series on it's own merit.

Nellie was awesome! I really liked how later in the series, when everyone grew up, Nellie was always trying to redeem her evil ways. And then there was Nancy! Or, as I like to think of her, Nellie 2.0. :-)

And yes...Mary was totally boring until she went blind.

  4. I suppose they had to bring a Nellie 2.0 character once Nellie fell in love with Percival and turned into a normal human being. Nancy was fairly horrible, but she never hit the same level of uber-bitch as Nellie

I always thought Mary was bland and annoying as hell until she went blind...she was so perfect (even more so in the books), it was almost a little puke-worthy

  6. I did like Little House on the Prairie; sometimes it could get a little sickening sweet, but did enjoy it. I'd probably say more Team Laura :)

enjoy your books; can never get enough of them especially at that price!

  7. love love LOVED that show! lots of good memories of the whole family watching together, and someone crying when Mary went blind (and yes, she was dull, dull, dull before that) - and pictures of me as a kid with side-braids looking EXACTLY like little Laura Ingalls.

And I remember a tad bit of confusion, thinking the show was ACTUALLY filmed during ye good ole pioneer days. ha!

I was definitely on Team Laura - she had enough spunk and didn't eat pickles dipped in syrup.

    1. My mom and I watched Little House together every week and I remember crying hysterically when the blind school caught fire and Mary's baby and Jonathan's wife died...it was traumatizing

  8. Oops, I must have stumbled onto the wrong blog, I was never a LHOTP fan, but I sure did have a crush on Rob Lowe, does that get me any points?
